Definition: Heat cramps are painful cramps in the arms, legs
or abdomen.
Definition: Heat exhaustion is also caused by the heat and occurs when the body’s cooling system fails. Symptoms associated with heat exhaustion include rapid, increased pulse and breathing; clammy skin; heavy sweating; and total body weakness/exhaustion.
Definition: Heat stroke occurs when the body has used up all its water and salt. The symptoms of heat stroke are easier to notice than other heat related illnesses and include dry hot skin (sometimes red in color), slowed down or no sweating, irrational behavior, loss of consciousness, and in some cases, convulsions.
Definition: Frostbite is damage to body tissue caused by
the extreme cold. There are many symptoms associated with frostbite you need
to
be aware of to recognize the illness either in yourself or a co-worker. Frostbite
symptoms include numbness in the affected area, a waxy appearance to the skin,
the affected skin is cold to the touch and the skin in the area becomes flushed/red,
white, yellow or blue.
Definition: Hypothermia is a condition caused when the body
temperature drops to bellow 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Hypothermia is a very serious
illness and can kill. Someone who has experienced hypothermia may suffer from
permanent kidney, liver and pancreas damage. If you or others notice numbness
in the arms and legs, muscle tension, feeling cold and fatigued and uncontrollable
shivering, take immediate action and seek medical attention as these are all
symptoms of hypothermia.
